While it was a delicious deal for customers, it was terrible for the company: Red Lobster lost $3.3 million in seven weeks. The deal was once again too popular, and Red Lobster was unprepared for its customers’ insatiable lust for discounted shellfish. Red Lobster is now reportedly considering filing for bankruptcy protection to restructure its debt and shed some of its 650 US locations. I compared Pillsbury's Moist Supreme, Duncan Hines' Perfectly Moist, and Betty Crocker's Super Moist white cake mixes. It's great to make a cake from scratch, but a boxed mix is perfect in a pinch. Alana Al-HatlaniWhite cake is the most versatile of cake flavors, ready to be filled or iced with any flavor. It can also easily be bland, making the mix used crucial to the success of the final cake. All of the cake layers were baked on the center rack of my oven and mixed according to the directions on each box.

For fudgy, chocolaty, and moist brownies, Pillsbury is the way to go. The brownies from Pillsbury and Ghirardelli had a rich, chocolaty flavor but weren't overly sweet. Alana Al-HatlaniWhen I'm making brownies, I aim for a result that's fudgy, rather than cakey, with a noticeable chocolate flavor that isn't overly sweet or dry. They baked off evenly, weren't overly sweet, and had a shiny crackled crust and tender edges that didn't dry out. Ghirardelli perhaps had a better chocolate flavor than Pillsbury but had dry edges.

As a professional baker, I don't often use boxed mixes, but I appreciate how easily they bring a cake together. I tried Duncan Hines, Pillsbury, and Betty Crocker cake mixes. CNN —Chelsea FC women’s manager Emma Hayes has been named head coach of the US Women’s National Team, the US Soccer Federation announced on Tuesday. She was named 2021’s Best FIFA Women’s Coach and is a finalist for the 2023 award. US Soccer, which reached an equal pay deal with female players in May 2022, said, without offering specifics, that Hayes’ contract makes her the highest paid women’s soccer coach in the world. “We felt strongly that Emma was the best person and coach to take the US Women’s National Team forward,” US Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker said. “I remember being a young coach working my way up through the system in the US and watching all those young girls aspire to play on the US Women’s National Team.

Direct air capture involves extracting carbon directly from the atmosphere. The technology could be developed on the back of Exxon's carbon capture and storage (CCS) business which will also involve trapping emissions underground, Crocker said. Exxon last year extended a joint research agreement with DAC developer Global Thermostat, intended to accelerate development of the technology for full-scale deployment. DAC "would link very closely to our CCS business where we are going to have large geologic storage and the capability to capture CO2," Crocker said. Limiting its own emissions and CCS take up the majority of the $17 billion allocated for Exxon's Low Carbon business through 2022-2027.

The Americans, who own a record four World Cup titles and had never before finished worse than third place, left town long before the party was over after a shock defeat to Sweden in the last 16. "Our commitment to excellence remains unshakeable, and we believe this strategic plan will set the foundation for our women's national team to achieve greater heights in the years to come." The U.S. federation must also replace women's national team General Manager Kate Margkraf, whose departure was announced on Friday. But the Macedonian-American never shied from bringing the next generation into the fold, as he fielded the least experienced U.S. team in memory with 14 World Cup newcomers, compared to only eight in 2015. But fans looking for a glimmer of hope from the Americans' dismal campaign can look to the younger players.

The former National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) coach took the reins in 2019 after the U.S. collected a second consecutive world title but they have failed to keep that momentum going. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos has had a "glo-up" in recent years since stepping back from the company. He went from eating a tin of biscuits for breakfast every morning to putting in hours in the gym. Jeff Bezos was a pretty scrawny guy when he founded Amazon in 1994. She said that Bezos "stole" her personal trainer, Wes Okerson, who has also trained celebrities like Tom Cruise and Gerard Butler. Beyond his personal diet and fitness regimen Bezos has reportedly also invested in anti-aging research company Altos Labs.

A Lesson in Tender, Tangy Lemon Bars
  + stars: | 2023-07-24 | by ( Genevieve Ko | More About Genevieve Ko | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
I had no idea what lemon bars were. My classmates said that my new school would turn my Chinese American self into a banana or a Twinkie — yellow on the outside, white within. Because the lemon bars didn’t taste like a loss of identity, but an expansion of it. But from-scratch treats from midcentury Americana were foreign to me — and lemon bars tasted especially mysterious, at once sour and sweet, rich and sharp. The next year, Betty Crocker’s “Cooky Book” included a recipe for Lemon Squares, which extended its popularity beyond local community cookbooks.

June 28 (Reuters) - General Mills' (GIS.N) full-year profit forecast on Wednesday came in largely below analysts' estimates as the U.S. packaged food maker battles with slow demand for its ready-to-eat cereals and meal kits due to higher prices. Shares of the Cheerios cereal maker fell 4% in premarket trading after General Mills reported a 6 point fall in sales volumes in the fourth quarter. Price hikes to offset inflation in labor, raw materials and transportation has aided top-line growth at U.S. packaged food makers. Increasing caution on part of consumers also impacted their at-home versus away-from-home food choices, and the brands they choose, General Mills said. General Mills forecast fiscal 2024 organic net sales to rise 3% to 4%, while it reported growth of 5% in fiscal 2023.

Lab crunch: British science has nowhere to go

Property consultants Bidwells put demand for lab space in Cambridge at 1.19 million square feet (110,000 square metres) - but only 7,000 sq ft are available. That has led to an explosion in venture capital, with much of it coming from the United States. Michael Chen moved to Cambridge from the United States in 2012 to do a doctorate in chemistry. She leads a joint venture between Oxford University and Legal & General (LGEN.L) to build lab space and homes. Pioneer Group, which provides funding and lab space in Britain, said action was needed now to address the "crazy" demand.

A federal jury in Virginia on Tuesday found mostly in favor of two police officers who were sued by a U.S. Army lieutenant after he was pepper sprayed, struck and handcuffed during a traffic stop. The jury also awarded Nazario $1,000 in punitive damages after Windsor police officer Daniel Crocker illegally searched Nazario’s SUV, the attorneys said. A federal judge already ruled last year that Crocker was liable for the search. The jury found in favor of Crocker and against Nazario’s claims of assault and battery and false imprisonment, the attorneys said. U.S. District Judge Roderick C. Young had narrowed the scope of Nazario’s lawsuit.
Since the traffic stop, Nazario has developed anxiety, depression and PTSD, according to his lawsuit. “In fact, shortly after the traffic stop, Mr. Nazario deployed to Washington, D.C. in support of the January 6, 2021 disturbance.”Nazario, a medical officer, said he arrived after the insurrection occurred, according to a deposition. Besides Nazario’s lawsuit, fallout from the traffic stop includes a lawsuit brought by the state attorney general that alleges Windsor discriminated against Black Americans. U.S. District Judge Roderick C. Young also narrowed the scope of Nazario’s lawsuit. That episode happened during a 2019 traffic stop while Gutierrez served as a sheriff’s deputy in Isle of Wight County.
Nick Crocker, 37, is living in a school bus he built out with his fiancée in Portland, Oregon. Crocker said his student debt is his "biggest regret" and wishes he had gone to trade school. With the majority of Crocker's debt being private loans, Biden's relief won't make a significant dent for him and about 3 million other borrowers with private loans. He says he wishes he'd known the high, life-long costs of higher education when he was in high school. "So we're living in a 120-square-foot school bus, and while it's been a great way for us to save the money, it's cramped.
General Mills Raises Outlook on Higher Snack Sales

General Mills said it now expects stronger organic sales growth this year and higher adjusted earnings. General Mills Inc. raised its outlook for 2023 after the consumer foods company increased prices and reported a boost in sales for its snacks and baking products. The Minneapolis-based maker of Cheerios and Betty Crocker cake mix said sales rose 4% to $5.2 billion in its fiscal second quarter, driven by higher prices and positive shifts in the mix of products it sold. Volumes, meanwhile, fell 12%, with major drop-offs in its international and pet businesses.
CNN —A group of retired ambassadors, all of whom served as chief of mission at the US Embassy in Afghanistan, have written a letter to congressional leaders pushing them to include the Afghan Adjustment Act in the omnibus spending bill. The legislation “keeps our deep and binding commitments we made to our wartime allies. This is a moral imperative but also ensures we will find future allies in conflicts to come,” former ambassadors Ryan Crocker, Ronald E. Neumann, William Wood, Earl Anthony Wayne, James Cunningham, P. Michael McKinley, Hugo Llorens and Ross Wilson write in the letter being sent Wednesday evening. The letter, organized by AfghanEvac’s Shawn vanDiver and former ambassador Phil Kosnett, stands as a push from respected leaders and experts on Afghanistan that passing the bill is essential to meeting the United States’ obligations. This story is breaking and will be updated.
On Nov. 18, Florida resident Amanda Ramirez sued the Kraft Heinz Company for at least $5 million over what she claims is deceptive and fraudulent packaging. Ramirez says that since Kraft’s Velveeta Shells & Cheese Microwavable Shell Pasta takes longer than 3-and-a-half minutes to prepare even though its packing states “ready in 3½ minutes,” that constitutes fraud. What the plaintiff focuses on is the fifth instruction, “cheese sauce will thicken upon standing” which they say constitutes a longer “ready” time than the packaging claims. “Consumers seeing ‘ready in 3½ minutes’ will believe it represents the total amount of time it takes to prepare the Product,” the suit reads. “However, the directions outlined above show that 3-and-a-half minutes is just the length of time to complete one of several steps.
